Italian Coffee Vocabulary Lesson

Cappuccino is one shot of espresso, 3/4 cup steamed milk with a dollop of froth. It can be garnished with chocolate, cinnamon or nutmeg.

Latte is one shot of espresso (or two shots for a double latte), 1/2 cup steamed milk with about 1/2 to 1/3 froth.

Ristretto
A shorter extraction that creates a thicker, more flavorful coffee with less volume.

Espresso Lungo
A longer extraction that produces a larger volume. Served with a small pitcher of hot water on the side.

Caffè Macchiato
A single espresso topped with a dollop of milk foam

Note: Both steamed milk and froth can be achieved with Magnifica’s patented Cappuccino System Frother.

Using Magnifica’s Patented Cappuccino System Milk Frother

Step 1:
Press the steam button. The light will flash indicating that the machine is heating up. When the light remains on without flashing, the machine has reached the ideal temperature for steam.

Step 2:
Fill a container (metal container is recommended) with about 3.5 ounces of cold milk (skim milk is recommended). When choosing the size of the container, remember that the volume will increase by 2 or 3 times.

Step 3:
Move the milk frother towards the outside of the machine. Prepare the espresso/coffee (using large cups) as noted in the “How to Prepare the Perfect Espresso” section of the web site.

Step 4:
Insert the milk frother into the container of milk and turn the steam knob half a turn counter-clockwise until it stops. To make a creamier froth, rotate the container with slow movements from the bottom to the top.

Step 5:
To terminate steam operation, turn the steam knob clockwise until it stops and then press the steam button to deactivate the steam function. Pour the frothed or steamed milk into cups containing espresso. Note: The milk frother must be cleaned after every use.
