Question: What type of coffee
do I need to use in my espresso machine?
Answer: When preparing espresso, you should always
use the proper bean. Espresso beans are roasted longer than
other beans and deliver a full, rich flavor and aroma. Choose
an Italian espresso roast coffee bean. For pump-driven espresso
machines, you should choose a fine coffee grind. For steam-driven
espresso machines, use a coarse ground coffee.
Although any whole beans or ground coffee can be used with
the Magnifica, for a perfect espresso every time De’Longhi
recommends using whole bean or ground espresso coffee from
illy, the
world's finest espresso coffee.
Question: Where do I find
the appropriate coffee beans?
Answer: Most supermarkets carry Italian or “espresso”
beans. Gourmet food stores and coffee shops also carry a wide
variety of beans.
Question: How do I know if
the coffee beans are fresh?
Answer: You will know espresso roast coffee beans
are fresh if they have an oily surface.
Question: Why does anyone
drink espresso? It’s always so bitter.
Answer: An authentic espresso should have a rich
flavor, never bitter. Old coffee beans or coffee that has
not been freshly ground may result in bitterness. For rich
flavor, always use freshly ground beans or relatively fresh
pre-ground coffee.
Question: Does espresso have
a lot of caffeine?
Answer: Actually, because espresso beans are roasted
longer than other coffee beans, they have a lower caffeine
level. A cup of espresso has more concentrated coffee flavor
that should not be confused with caffeine content.
Question: What’s the brown
layer on top of an espresso?
Answer: The light brown layer that floats on top
of an espresso is known, in Italian, as the “crema.” Distinguished
by its caramel-color, the crema is the essence of authentic
espresso. The crema carries a variety of flavors that comprise
the coffee bean. The presence of crema means the espresso
is fresh and perfectly prepared. It is a natural layer produced
by the pump pressure.
Question: What is the difference
between a cappuccino and latte?
Answer: A cup of cappuccino is one shot of espresso,
3/4 cup steamed milk with a dollop of froth. It can be garnished
with chocolate, cinnamon or nutmeg. A cup of latte is one
shot of espresso (or two shots for a double latte), 1/2 cup
steamed milk with about 1/2 to 1/3 froth.
Question: When I’m making
cappuccino, how do I make froth and what type of milk should
I use?
Answer: Steaming and frothing milk for cappuccino
requires two things: a powerful machine and a cold metal pitcher
of skim milk. (Skim milk works best because it has very little
fat.) Using the patented Cappuccino System Frother, pour 1/3
cup of milk into the pitcher so the milk can aerate, and the
Magnifica will deliver high levels of steam at the touch of
a button. Tilt the pitcher so the steam nozzle is just below
the surface of the milk and the frother will do the rest.
Remember to keep your metal pitcher in the freezer to ensure
the milk is properly chilled.
Question: How many cups does
this machine make?
Answer: The Magnifica can deliver either 1 or 2 espressos
or 1 or 2 American coffees.
Question: Can the coffee
delivery be stopped at any time?
Answer: Yes. Simply press either the
button or the
button to terminate coffee delivery.
Question: Is it easy to
clean the Magnifica espresso maker?
Answer: Very easy, but before performing any of the
following cleaning operations, be sure to turn off and unplug
the machine. The used coffee container, water tank, drip tray
and frother are removable for easy cleaning. Note: Never immerse
the machine in water.
Question: Do I have to keep
changing the water?
Answer: The Magnifica doesn’t need to be refilled
until it’s low. An indicator light will illuminate when it’s
time to refill the water tank. Water can remain in the machine
between uses. Note: It is recommended to always use fresh
water, as this will result in a better-tasting espresso. Empty
the tank if you intend to leave the machine unused for an
extended period of time.
